TECHNICAL GUIDANCE

Preparing a Filtration Enquiry

A practical checklist for an oil filter, screen, plate press or replacement element.

1. Identify the stream

Name the liquid at the point where filtration is proposed. A broad label such as “EFB” is not enough to identify the duty.

  • Oil, recovered oil, mixed liquor or solids slurry.
  • Upstream equipment and existing separation stages.
  • Representative analysis or sample availability.

2. State the operating basis

Give normal and peak conditions separately. Record how the values were measured or estimated.

  • Liquid flow in m³/h or L/h and operating hours.
  • Normal and maximum temperature; viscosity if known.
  • Solids concentration and particle/fibre information.

3. Describe the required result

Define the acceptance criterion rather than an undefined promise of “clear oil”.

  • Required filtrate quality and test method.
  • Permitted solids carry-over and downstream use.
  • Cake handling, liquid recovery and disposal constraints.

4. Include the complete cycle

A batch filter’s cycle includes more than the time spent filtering.

  • Filling, filtration, draining, cake discharge and cleaning.
  • Manual or automated steps to be included in the scope.
  • Existing standby or parallel-filter arrangement, if any.

5. Define the equipment interfaces

Help KCP separate the base filter from the surrounding package.

  • Feed pump, strainers/screens and recirculation arrangement.
  • Tanks, valves, piping, instruments and controls to be included.
  • Installation space, access, utilities and cleaning constraints.

6. For spares, identify the installed element

The old part and the mating arrangement are the starting point.

  • Filter or separator model and element drawing.
  • Dimensions, outlet/fixing details, quantity and delivery location.
  • Specified media, seal material and process conditions.

This checklist supports quotation preparation. It is not an operating procedure or a certified selection calculation. Final equipment selection and ratings require KCP and supplier confirmation.
